A fisherman in Vietnam's Ca Mau province got an unexpected catch late on September 28: a rare sea turtle weighing roughly 70 kilograms, tangled in his net while he was fishing offshore, according to Vietnam+.

From fishing net to safe release

Pham Viet Khai brought the turtle ashore and gave it temporary care before notifying the Tam Giang Tay Border Guard Station. Officers assessed the animal and, finding it in good health, released it back into the sea the following day, September 29.

Part of a wider pattern of local cooperation

It's the second such rescue in the area in recent weeks — a 3-kilogram green turtle was released under similar circumstances on September 14. Sea turtles are protected under Vietnamese law, and several species are listed as threatened by the IUCN and included in international trade protections under CITES.
