12-Year-Old's Diaper Drive Delivers 30,000 Diapers to Arizona Families
For the fifth year running, 12-year-old Sloan organized a diaper drive for Nourish Phoenix, this year collecting nearly 30,000 diapers for families who can't easily get help with the cost.
Sloan started her diaper drive at age seven with a modest goal of helping a few families in her Phoenix community. Five years later, at 12, her fifth annual drive brought in nearly 30,000 diapers for Nourish Phoenix — more than her own target of 22,500.
A need that's easy to overlook
Nourish Phoenix is a food and clothing bank that also provides hygiene products and job assistance to families in need. Staff there say diapers are consistently among the most requested items — and, unlike food, there's no government assistance program specifically designed to help families afford them.
Sloan collected donations from friends, family, and strangers throughout the year, filling a U-Haul truck to deliver everything to the food bank at once.
"It's really important to do that"
"If we have the ability to give someone something that they might not have or need, it's really important to do that," Sloan said. Her mother described her daughter as someone who "has such a big heart, loves helping and giving back."
